The Nicholas Mosse Story

Nick Mosse fell in love with clay when he was only seven years old. As the son of a flour merchant, his passion took him from Ireland to England and Japan to master his craft. In 1976, he returned home to Bennettsbridge, County Kilkenny. With a small bank loan, he opened a pottery studio in an old family cow shed. He wanted to bring back traditional 18th-century Irish Spongeware - beautiful, useful pottery decorated with handmade sponges.

Soon, Nick met and married Susan, an American botanical artist. Susan became the creative heart of the business. Inspired by Irish wildflowers and the famous Kilfane garden, she spends an entire year creating just one single new pattern. Today, this family love affair with clay employs over 80 people and shares Irish craft with eight countries worldwide.

The Mill: Born from Water and Fire

The pottery lives in a historic 1800s flour mill on the banks of the River Nore. Nick and Susan bought the family mill and restored its old water wheel. This allowed them to use clean, hydro-electrical river power to fire their pottery making them pioneers in green energy.

In 1985, tragedy struck when the mill burned to the ground. Undeterred, Nick and Susan rebuilt it completely. Today, the fully restored mill welcomes over 100,000 visitors every year as a famous stop along Ireland’s Ancient East.

The Craft: 20 Steps to Perfection

The 20-Step Journey: Each piece goes through 20 separate handmade steps before it is ready for the shop shelf.
The Sponge-Dab Method: Decorators use specially cut sea sponges to dab mineral paint onto the clay. Because it is done entirely by hand, no two pieces are ever exactly the same.
Master Training: Nick personally trains every decorator. The head decorator, Michael Holden, has been with the team for nearly 38 years and has created custom ceramics for both Popes and Presidents.
